Nursing and Midwifery Assessments and Registration

Aug 13, 2014

Please note that APHRA – the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority – has recently reviewed assessment standards for nursing and midwifery registration. This effectively means that a positive skills assessment as a nurse or midwife under ANMAC (Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council) for migration purposes does not automatically mean registration as either a nurse or midwife in Australia.
Under the General Skilled Migration Category, a “Letter of Determination” must be provided by ANMAC to support an application for migration, as determined by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIPB). However, this determination is not registration. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) is responsible for registration and may not automatically be granted in the category of nursing and midwifery following this assessment regardless of the ANMAC determination. NMBA may have additional requirements and applicants who have been positively assessed by ANMAC must register with NMBA to be assessed for registration. Skills assessments will be held at ANMAC and can be delivered to NMBA by request for registration assessment.
